Southern Tenerife
Casa Fuerte
The fortified ruins of a 16th-century Adeje estate built to protect a sugar operation from pirate attacks and later used as the seat of the local lordship.
- 16th-century fortified estate in Adeje
- Built in response to pirate threats against the sugar economy
- Later seat of the local jurisdictional lordship
Casa Fuerte began to be built in 1555 on the initiative of Pedro de Ponte. Tenerife’s tourism board links its fortified character directly to the need to protect the local sugar operation from English and French pirate attacks.
The complex became more than a defensive residence. In 1655 it became the seat of the jurisdictional lordship granted to Juan Bautista de Ponte Fonte y Pagés, connecting the site with the political and economic history of Adeje.
Today the surviving walls and ruins are valuable precisely because they combine several stories in one place: sugar wealth, Atlantic insecurity, landed power and the transformation of southern Tenerife before the modern resort era.
