Golf del Sur has been part of Tenerife’s golf scene since 1987. The current course is an 18-hole par-72 championship layout running through volcanic terrain beside the San Blas Nature Reserve. It was originally designed by Pepe Gancedo and later remodelled by Manuel Piñero, and the course continues to evolve through a major programme of green, tee and bunker improvements.
Course character
This is a strategic south-coast course where ravines, elevation, bunkers, water and the trade winds all influence club choice. The official hole guide repeatedly emphasises position: some holes favour a conservative lay-up, others reward choosing one side of the fairway to open the green, and several par 3s can change dramatically when the wind is up.
Tips & tricks
Treat the wind as part of the course, especially on the exposed par 3s. When the official guide suggests a lay-up, there is usually a reason — water and bunkering can turn an aggressive line into a big number quickly. If you have not played the course before, centre-green targets are a sensible default on the more exposed approaches. The club’s published pace-of-play guidance estimates about 4.5 hours for a round.
Visitor setup
Golf del Sur is well set up for travelling golfers. The club offers rental sets, buggies with GPS, electric and manual trolleys and a driving range. The course is close to Tenerife South Airport and the Golf del Sur/San Miguel resort area, making it easy to include early or late in a southern Tenerife trip.
Did you know?
The course opened in 1987 with a professional tournament. Its long tournament history is one reason Golf del Sur is more than a holiday-resort layout: it has been part of Canary Islands competitive golf for decades.
Planning your round
Check the official course page before playing because Golf del Sur is in an active improvement programme and course conditions can temporarily change. Equipment hire and green fees are seasonal. The club asks players to arrive at least 10 minutes before their tee time and publishes an estimated round time of 4.5 hours.
